The sulfur dioxide (SO2) reacts with the calcium carbonate (CaCO3), resulting in high-purity gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) as a usable byproduct. This method guarantees a desulfurization efficiency of up to 99%, making it ideal for large-scale thermal plants facing stringent European emissions targets.
For installations with constrained space or lower SO2 concentrations, Dry Sorbent Injection (using sodium bicarbonate or hydrated lime) offers a highly economical alternative. Since no water is consumed or wastewater produced, DSI systems bypass complex water treatment permits. This process is particularly suitable for municipal waste incinerators and industrial boilers in arid or environmentally sensitive areas of mainland Greece and its islands.
