Technical Deep-Dive: Natural Gas Tail Gas Recovery Processes

Modern natural gas sweetening plants generate tail gas streams laden with sour gases ($H_2S$, $CO_2$), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), BOG fractions, and trace noble gases. Traditional combustion or venting of these slip streams is no longer permissible under tightening EPA, EU, and national regulations. Industrial operators require process pathways to minimize carbon intensity while recovering valuable co-products.

1. Claus Sulfur Recovery Unit Tail Gas Treatment (TGTU)

Traditional Claus units achieve 95% to 98% sulfur recovery. The residual gas contains $H_2S$, $SO_2$, $CS_2$, and $COS$. Our advanced hydrogenation and amine recovery packages convert all sulfur compounds back to $H_2S$ before re-routing them to the primary amine treatment column, achieving total sulfur recovery efficiencies exceeding 99.9%.

2. Cryogenic Nitrogen & BOG Helium Extraction

BOG (Boil-Off Gas) from LNG storage tanks represents a high-purity hydrocarbon stream rich in nitrogen and helium. Utilizing multi-stage cryogenic separation columns and non-condensable fraction fractionation, we extract high-purity industrial helium (He) alongside clean fuel gas, securing a high-value byproduct.

3. Wet & Dry Desulfurization Systems

For low-to-medium flow rates, we provide skid-mounted dry desulfurization (using engineered iron oxide or activated carbon beds) and regenerative wet desulfurization systems. These systems guarantee $H_2S$ concentrations below $4 \text{ mg/Nm}^3$ to prevent corrosion and satisfy environmental regulations.

Skid-Mounted Modular Engineering & Plant Integration

Civil work at remote extraction assets is costly and logistically challenging. To mitigate field installation hazards and project delays, Hebei Hongke Qingneng specializes in skid-mounted process engineering. Our gas recovery, purification, and liquefaction units are designed, assembled, wired, piped, and fully wet-tested in our controlled Langfang workshop before transport.

Purification Equipment & Feed Gas Conditioning

Raw natural gas must undergo rigorous pre-treatment before liquefaction or transport. Our skid-mounted packages cover:

  • Deacidification Units: Amine-solvent scrubbing (MDEA/DEA) optimized for selective $CO_2$ and $H_2S$ capture.
  • Dehydration Packages: Molecular sieve adsorption beds achieving dew points of $-100^\circ\text{C}$.
  • Heavy Hydrocarbon Removal: Cryogenic condensation steps to prevent freezing in downstream liquefaction cold boxes.

High-Temperature Hazardous Waste & Hydrolysis Systems

Complementing our gas recovery solutions, we manufacture pressure vessel solutions for bio-safety containment. Our central and mobile high-temperature steam sterilization systems handle laboratory animal carcasses and medical waste. Incorporating advanced thermal-hydrolysis technology, they safely break down biological waste, rendering it sterile and inert.

Engineering Roadmap: Decarbonization & Trace Gas Extraction

As the global energy transition accelerates, natural gas processing must adapt to tighter environmental regulations. Hebei Hongke Qingneng is actively developing technologies to support these changes:

Low-Concentration Helium Cryogenic Extraction

Commercial helium extraction typically requires feed gas concentrations above 0.1%. Our research team is designing cryogenic fractionation schemes capable of processing feed streams with helium content down to 0.03% to 0.05%, broadening the economic viability of helium recovery.

Integration of Mixed Refrigerant Cycles (MRC)

Drawing on the work of Dr. Sun Zhaohu and Dr. Cheng Kuwei, we optimize mixed refrigerant composition ratios (combining nitrogen, methane, ethylene, propane, and isopentane) to match the cooling curves of target gas streams, reducing compressor energy consumption by up to 15%.
