How does a mixed refrigerant cycle (MRC) compare to nitrogen expansion for small-scale liquefaction plants?
The Mixed Refrigerant Cycle (MRC) provides significantly higher thermodynamic efficiency than Nitrogen expansion cycles, especially at scale. Because MRC utilizes a blended mixture of hydrocarbons (C1 through C4) and Nitrogen, the phase change temperature profile of the refrigerant closely matches the condensation curve of the natural gas stream. This minimizes heat transfer loss in the main cold box, translating to lower specific power consumption (kWh/kg of liquefied product). Nitrogen expansion cycles are simpler to start and operate, making them suitable for ultra-small systems, while MRC is preferred for mid-sized plants seeking optimized operating costs.
